Cannabis and Eicosanoids: A Review of Molecular Pharmacology
نویسنده
چکیده
Many constituents of cannabis exhibit beneficial anti-inflammatory properties, such as 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in hemp seed oil. The effects of these cannabis constituents on eicosanoid metabolism is reviewed. THC and GLA modulate the arachidonic acid cascade, inhibiting the production of series 2 prostaglandins and series 4 leukotrienes. Cannabinoid receptoras well as non-receptor-mediated signal transduction pathways appear to be involved. It is proposed that THC acts as a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.), commonly known as hemp, is an annual herb belongs to the family Cannabacea. The seeds of this plant have considerable content of oil and unsaturated fatty acids, and its fiber is used in the paper and textile industries. Tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol are main cannabinoid compounds of this plant, which have high importance for their well-known pharmaceutical...

The following review of literature regarding the pharmacology of marijuana is intended to demonstrate its mental and physical pharmacological effects. "Marijuana" refers specifically to the dried leaves and flowering tops or "herbal cannabis”, the natural form of cannabis as derived from the plant Cannabis sativa. Another term for marijuana is the word cannabis or hemp.

Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol from Cannabis sativa is mimicked by cannabimimetic analogs such as CP55940 and WIN55212-2, and antagonized by rimonabant and SR144528, through G-protein-coupled receptors, CB1 in the brain, and CB2 in the immune system. Eicosanoids anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol are the "endocannabinoid" agonists for these receptors. CB1 receptors are abundant in basal ganglia...
